National Health Insurance Authority pays GH¢43.8m claims to service providers
The Eastern Regional National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), paid GH¢43,870,447.52 claims to service providers last year.
A total of GH¢29,548,949.13 claims were paid to service providers from January to July this year, Mr Francis Oti Frempong, Senior Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, made this known at a media sensitisation session on the operations of Health Insurance in Koforidua on Wednesday.
He indicated that 1,899,928 Ghanaians had registered with the scheme in the area, representing 73.19 per cent of the region’s population.
Mr Frempong mentioned some of the achievements of the Authority as the implementation of instant membership renewal policy, instant registration for children below five years, review of service tariff and review of medicines.
Mr Frempong indicated that the region saved GH¢100,000 through clinical auditing last year.
He mentioned some of the challenges of the Authority as delay by service providers in the submission of claims, misapplication of tariffs, irrational prescription of medicines, inflation of the quantities of medicines supplied, unauthorized co-payment, provision of services above accreditation level and overbilling of medicines by some providers.
Mr Windham Emil Aram, Regional Manager of the NHIA, appealed to the media personnel to educate the public on the operations of the scheme to erase their negative perceptions about the Authority.
He denied allegations that the National Health Insurance Scheme had collapsed, saying “it is …alive and kicking”.
Mr Afram indicated that the government quest to achieve quality and affordable health care for Ghanaians required that all stakeholders were well informed on the operations of the scheme.
