Ghana prisoners to vote in 2012 elections – EC

Dr. Afari Gyan - Electoral Commissioner

The Electoral Commission (EC) says it register prison inmates which will enable them to vote in the 2012 general elections.

Chairman of the EC, Dr Afari Gyan told Citi FM that the commission will put all the necessary measures in place to start the process.

“We will register them like any ordinary Ghanaian for the 2012 elections,” Dr Gyan told the radio station in a recorded interview played today November 9, 2011.

This follows a call made by Ghana’s President Atta Mills yesterday when he inaugurated the Ankaful Maximum Security Prison in the Central Region and cut the sod for the commencement of the second phase of the prison project.

President John Evans Atta Mills gave the assurance that government would resource the Electoral Commission (EC) to put in place mechanisms that would enable prison inmates to exercise their franchise.

He said prison inmates have the right to exercise their franchise and that the government and the EC would abide by the Supreme Court ruling on the issue.
