MTN hands over refurbished Kpedze Health Centre to GHS

MTN, mobile telephony market leaders in Ghana, on Friday handed over a refurbished Health Centre at Kpedze to the Ghana Health Service (GHS), pledging to sustain the company’s bond with people through such interventions.

The refurbishment, that cost 160,000 cedis, was funded by the MTN Foundation and it involved the total refurbishment of the main Out-Patients-Department (OPD) and the Maternity Block.

Mr Robert Kuzoe, Executive Secretary of the Foundation, said the works would go a long way to “complement efforts at enhancing the wellbeing of the people of Kpedze and its surrounding areas”.

He said the idea was sold to the Foundation by the “Achievers Club” of Ho.

Kpedze, in the Ho Municipal Area, is a sprawling border community with several satellite communities but without a hospital.

Mr Francis Soglo, Superintendent in charge of the Health Centre, told the Ghana News Agency, that before MTN’s intervention, the facility was in a terribly bad shape.

He said the roofs leaked; doors fell apart, windows were without louvers, no water and electricity and was twice gutted by fire.

Mr Soglo said in some instances, midwives in the processes of helping a labouring mother to deliver, had to flee when snakes thrust through the cracks into the delivery room.

Mr Emmanuel Bedzra, Ho-West Member of Parliament, who said he contributed 10,000 cedis towards the refurbisment, tasked workers to keep it in good shape.

Dr Atsu Seake-Kwawu, Ho Municipal Director of the GHS, said the refurbishment was a “massive intervention” and impressive while Mr Isaac Kodobisah, Ho Municipal Chief Executive described it as a huge load taken off the Assembly’s back.

Mr Joseph Amenowode, Volta Regional Minister, commended Doelyne Enterprises, contracting firm and Multicad Consulting Architects, the consultants for a good work done.

He said some other contractors would have spent contract moneys on other things, warning that all non-performing contractors in the region would be sanctioned.
