Retired Footballers to set up endowment fund

The Retired National Footballers Association of Ghana (RENFAG) in partnership with Primeval Consult, an event management outfit will soon embark on an exercise to raise funds for the establishment of an Endowment Fund for its members.

The fundraising exercise is to garner financial support for the upkeep of members and to enable the RENFAG to take care of the needs of its members, who once served the nation but some of whom have become paupers and bedridden with terminal illness among other defects.

Mr Larry Opare Otoo, Chief Executive Officer of Primeval Consult told GNA Sports that the decision to embark on the fundraising exercise was influenced by the plight of the retired footballers, most of whom are in a state of dejection as they battle with terminal illness.

He regretted that some of the former footballers have virtually become beggars, whilst others have become amputees as a result of injuries they suffered whilst playing for the national team.

A fundraising dinner dance will therefore be organized by RENFAG in partnership with Primeval Consult at the Banquet Hall, State House, Accra, on Saturday, July 30 to support the exercise.

The event, which is expected to raise GH¢200,000 will be invested into a special account from which the needs of the retired footballers will be taken care of.

The event will be attended by President John Evans Atta Mills, who is expected to be the Special Guest of Honour, with former Liverpool and England International, John Barnes and former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah in attendance.

According to Opare Otoo, the Dormaahene Osagyefo Osadeye Agyeman Badu II, will be the Chairman for the occasion.

He said a flat rate of GH¢100 will be charged for each ticket and called on the sporting public to support the cause of the retired footballers who devoted all their youthful days to the cause of the passion of the country.
