Only 5% of SIM cards not registered – NCA

Less than a month to the deadline for the SIM card registration exercise in Ghana, some mobile phone users have not registered their SIM cards, according to the National Communications Authority (NCA).

The Director-General of the NCA, Mr. Paarock VanPercy, made this known on the Citi FM breakfast show monitored by ghanabusinessnews.com today June 7, 2011.

He said, “as at the last time I checked, 95% of sim cards has been registered.”

Giving the processes of the SIM registration which demands a national ID such as Voter’s ID card, Drivers Licence among others, Mr VanPercy noted that the NCA is undertaken a sanitation programme to check the validity of the SIM card holders.

The registration which started in June last year ends on July, 1, 2011 and the NCA has indicated that it will not extend the deadline.

“Absolutely not… we will not extend the deadline”, he told the host Benard Avle when asked whether his outfit will make any extension.

Already, the NCA has indicated that it will describe all unregistered SIM cards as illegal.
