Fire guts labour ward of Dangme West District Hospital

Authorities at the Dangme West District Hospital have temporally closed down the Labour Ward Unit of the Maternity Department, following a fire outbreak which gutted the premises at the weekend.

The Ward has a 20-bed capacity for pregnant women.

The Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, Dr Kennedy Brightson, who made this known to the Ghana News Agency at Dodowa in the Greater Accra Region, said there were no casualties in the incident.

He said the fire was detected by one Esther Addo, a pregnant woman at the Ward, which destroyed the ceiling, air condition and other property.

Dr Brightson said the fire was brought under control before officials from the Ghana National Fire Service arrived at the scene.

He attributed the rampant fire outbreak at the hospital to poor wiring system and appealed to government to intervene to reverse the situation.

Dr Brightson also asked public-spirited bodies and individuals to assist the hospital in cash and kind to repair the labour ward and theatre to their full operational status to help save mothers from dying.
