MOWAC congratulates Dr Aidoo on re-election to UN Committee

The Ministry of Women and Children’s Affairs (MOWAC) on Thursday congratulated Dr Agnes Akosua Aidoo for being re-elected to the United Nations (UN) Committee on the Rights of the Child.

A statement issued in Accra by Mr G.K. Kumor, Director 1, said; “The Ministry commends and encourages you to continue with the good works and the heart you have for children.  We in the Ministry of Women and Children’s Affairs are committed to the enhancement of the welfare of Ghanaian children.”

It said in a highly competitive election by 180 State Parties to the convention on the Rights of the Child held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on December 21, 2010, Dr Aidoo was re-elected to the UN Committee as a Vice-Chairperson to serve a term of four years.

She won the election with eight other experts out of 20 candidates from all over the world.

Dr Aidoo attributed her success to three main factors; the mercy and blessing of God, support of the Ministry which nominated her and Ghana Missions in Geneva and New York which actively promoted her candidacy.

She believed that her contributions to the work of the Committee widely acknowledged helped to ensure her success.

Dr Aidoo expressed appreciation to Mrs Juliana Azumah-Mensah, Sector Minister and her staff, Mrs Ellen Nee Whang, Ghana’s Ambassador to Geneva and her staff and Mr Leslie Kojo Christian, Ghana’s Ambassador to the UN in New York and his staff.

“Mr Christian spared no effort to promote her candidacy in New York among State Parties from all regions,” it said.

The UN Committee has 18 independent experts who volunteer their time to monitor implementation of the human rights of children by State Parties under the global convention.

It meets three times a year in Geneva at the headquarters of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
