Brave cop thwarts bank robbery

The bravery of Police Constable Joseph Faaso of Adidome in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region saved a Nissan van carrying money from an armed robbery encounter, during which one of the robbers was killed in an exchange of fire at the VRA Sub Station on the Ho-Adaklu road.

The incident happened when the vehicle, with registration number GT 6928 Z, driven by one Elliot Kofi Anafi, and accompanied by a staff of the bank, Mr Kwasi Sakpe, was carrying money from the Adidome Rural Bank to be paid to customers at its branch office in Ho was intercepted by four Fulani herdsmen with an AK 47 rifle at about 6.00 p.m.

In the process, one of the Fulanis gave a warning shot, threatening the driver to come out for a search.

It was, however, unknown to the robbers that there was a police man on board the vehicle. Constable Faaso, sensing danger, gathered courage and shot at the robbers, killing one on the spot, wounding another one, who is currently on admission at the Volta Regional Hospital in Ho.

According to the Volta Regional Police Commander DCOP Bernard Dery, another wounded robber had escaped with gunshot wounds, while another one had also escaped unhurt with the AK 47.

DCOP Dery said the vehicle was, however, not damaged and no money was touched during the exchange of fire.

Police investigations continue.
