Magazine for Ghana’s aviation industry launched

The “Aviator Magazine” was launched in Accra on Wednesday to address some of the challenges in the reportage of aviation, tourism and hospitality industry issues.

Typical of these challenges is the terminologies used in the industry which may not be familiar to some media personnel.

Mr Enimil Ashon, Managing Editor of the Magazine, said with a dizzying leap of 22 airlines operating at the Kotoka International Airport from 2008 to 33 in 2011 shows that the aviation, tourism and hospitality sectors are growing.

He said last year saw three new airlines on Ghana’s domestic skies and at least, three more are expected to come on board this year.

Mr Ashon made this known at the launch of the magazine in Accra.

He said statistics from the African Airlines Association Africa indicates that market share in the aviation industry is only two to three per cent of the global market.

The World Tourism Organisation figures estimate 625 million tourist travelled worldwide in 1998 generating about $445 billion with Africa receiving nearly eight per cent of the global tourist trips.

Mr Ashon said the publishers of the Aviator would organise annual lectures on topics of relevance in the aviation; tourism and hospitality sectors.

“The sector needs such a platform to throw in fruitful ideas from its connected and well travelled players to widen everybody’s scope.”

Alhaji Collins Dauda, Minister of Transport in a speech read on his behalf said Ghana’s aviation and air travel industry stands out as one of the fastest growing and perhaps the most competitive in the West African sub-region.

He said the media had a critical role to play in Ghana’s quest to develop Accra as a hub of air transport to open up the economy through trade and tourism.

Alhaji Dauda said the Aviator would complement government’s effort in educating stakeholders of the roles they have to play in realising the dream.
