Muslim leader calls for religious tolerance

Alhaji Umar Farouk Saeed, Head of the Zongo Community in the Ashanti Region, has reiterated the need for religious tolerance to sustain national peace.

He said it behooves followers of the various religions to be more accommodating and shun acts likely to stoke social unrest and engender hatred.

“It is important we accept to be each other’s keeper”, he said, in a New Year message in Kumasi.

He denounced recent religious clashes in the northern part of Nigeria, which had claimed innocent lives and led to destruction of property.

“The cycle of violence going on there is totally uncalled for and we should not be lured into it.”

It appealed to all Muslims to be responsible in their conduct as the nation prepare towards general election.

“You should not allow yourselves to be used by any political party to perpetrate violence during the election.”

The statement commended Otumfuo Osei Tutu 11, Asantehene, for embracing all ethnic groups in the region and prayed to Allah to shower His mercies on him.
