I will contest for Presidency of Ghana Olympic Committee – Prof. Dodoo

Prof. Francis Dodoo

Professor Francis Dodoo, President of the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) has said that he will offer himself for elections again when nominations are opened for the presidency of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC).

He told GNA Sports in an interview in Maputo, that he still has ambitions of becoming the GOC President and will contest for the top post, when the Committee opens nominations for the elections by October 31.

Professor Dodoo, however, noted that he would seek the concern of some constituents such as his family, friends and others in sports administration before firming up the decision.

“I will contest for the GOC presidency but it would depend largely on the endorsement of some constituencies of mine, because the outcome of the last elections had some negative impact on my family and I need to get their approval first”. Professor Dodoo stated.

Asked why he is still keen on the position, the former national Triple Jumper said he has over the years acquired enough knowledge in sports administration and the GOC is a catalyst for stimulating sports development, hence his decision to vie for the position.

“I see the GOC as the body that will coordinate the promotion and development of sports in the country and by assisting the Associations to acquire partnership with international bodies, embassies and corporate bodies and I believe I can play that role effectively when given the nod”. Professor Dodoo added.

The GOC has for the past two years been engaged in a dispute following an election that saw the election of Professor Dodoo as the President.

The GOC President then, Benson T. Baba, however, disputed and insisted that the elections were not properly conducted leading to the intervention of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the subsequent suspension of Ghana from the international body.

The IOC recently lifted the ban on Ghana and directed that elections be held within two months.
