Herbalist, businessmen remanded for selling fake drugs
A Takoradi Circuit court “A” on Monday remanded a herbalist and two businessmen in police custody for selling fake drugs and Borges Olive oil.
The accused are Daniel Taku, Stephen Oppey, both business executives and Prince Nyarko, a herbalist.
They are to re-appear in court on September 09.
They pleaded not guilty to a four-count charge of possessing fake unlawful drugs, forgery of trademark, selling unwholesome food and practicing medicine without authority.
A fourth accomplice, Uche, a Nigerian residing at Tudu in Accra, mentioned as the supplier of the goods is on the run and being sought for by the police.
Chief Inspector Alice Parker-Wilson told the court presided over by Mr. Kwasi Boakye that the complainant is a sales executive of J. M Addo and Sons Limited who are the sole distributors of Borges Olive Oil in the West Africa Sub-region.
The prosecutor said on August 17 the complainant went to Takoradi to distribute some of the company’s products to their customers.
In the process, the complainant saw six fake Borges Olive oil bottles displayed at the La Fayette Enterprise in Takoradi for sale.
The complainant reported the matter to the police who arrested the shop attendant and seized the fake Borges Olive oil.
The shop attendant said she bought the oil from Taku who also mentioned Nyarko as the one who supplied the goods to him and he was arrested.
The prosecutor said the police searched the premises of Taku and retrieved large quantities of the fake Borges Olive oil with inscription “Toppey Kooko capsules” and Toppey Gona STD capsules.
Nyarko admitted ownership of the oil and mentioned one Uche, a Nigerian at Tudu in Accra as his supplier.
The prosecutor said samples of the fake Borges Olive oil have been dispatched to the laboratory of the Foods and Drugs Board in Accra for examination.
