Fulani herdsmen invade Kwahu West municipality

There is an influx of a large number of Fulani herdsmen in the Kwahu West Municipality engaging in nefarious activities such as armed robbery and dealing in narcotic drugs.

The herdsmen and their families, without resident permits, had acquired large tracts of land and putting up buildings at Trado, a suburb of Nkawkaw.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Alex Somuah Obeng, disclosed this at the second ordinary meeting of the first session of the assembly at Nkawkaw.

He said in a recent operation undertaken by the security agencies to arrest criminals in the municipality, two out of the 11 suspected armed robbers nabbed, were identified as Fulani herdsmen.

They were part of a gang of armed robbers operating on the Accra- Kumasi highway but unfortunately all of them had been released on the basis of lack of evidence.

Mr Obeng urged the assembly members to encourage people in their electoral areas to feel free to offer information that could lead to the arrest of criminals in the society.

He said the assembly had also ordered some illegal mining operators popularly known as “galamsey” in some communities, including Kofidede, Danteng, Esaase and Nkawkaw-Amanfrom, to leave those communities since the assembly had not granted them permit to operate.

Mr Obeng advised chiefs in the municipality to avoid taking monies from illegal mining operators, who attempts to bribe them for concessions.

The MCE said the assembly was undertaking a decongestion exercise at Nkawkaw to remove unauthorized structures and also drive away traders selling on the pavement and streets to ensure free movement of people in the community.

The Presiding Member of the assembly, Mr Emmanuel Kingsley Osei, advised the assembly members to accept and defend the assembly’s decisions and ensure its implementation to enhance development in the communities.
