Employers asked to enforce health and safety regulations

Mr Morgan Ayawine, Acting Deputy General Secretary of the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union, in charge of Operations, on Saturday appealed to employers to strictly enforce health and safety regulations at workplaces.

He said that organized labour should not only concern its self with decent work that results in the protection of the fundamental human rights of workers and their social and economic dignity, but should seek to increase productivity and improve national development.

Mr Ayawine made the call through Ghana News Agency at Tema ahead of this year’s May Day celebration, to be organised under the theme: “Decent Work for Sustainable Economic Development,” on Sunday.

He expressed concern about frequent industrial accidents at some companies, and asked the Inspectorate Division of the Labour Department to ensure that industrial establishments had safety equipment to protect workers.

Mr Ayawine said “We cannot increase productivity and build a strong nation if health and safety regulations at workplaces are completely flouted or ignored with impunity by some employers whose only aim is to maximize profit to the detriment of poor workers”.

He noted that Ghanaian workers were poised to maintain industrial peace and harmony at their workplaces.

Mr Ayawine called on employers and government to improve workers’ service conditions.

He paid glowing tribute to the pioneering workers for their sacrifices, toil, devotion and commitment to duty.

Mr Ayawine said trade unions had initiated measures to protect workers against the machinations of employers.

No laws works in Ghana and I just mention Health and Safety enforcement in my comment yesterday, now they are talking about Health and Safety. This severe breach of Health and Safety laws, Ghana is not China where some of these things are common. Ministry of labour have to lunch investigation regarding this accident as well as Labour if these workers where working in such conditions and how long. Again was the Ministry aware that these conditions exist and how long.
