Involve MMDCEs in award of contracts in their areas – MCE

The Mfantseman Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Henry Kweku Hayfron, has appealed to Ministries, Coordinating Councils, Departments and donor agencies to involve Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the award of contracts in their areas.

Mr Hayfron said; “if nothing at all they must send copies of the terms of the contracts to the MMDCEs for monitoring and supervision purpose.”

He said it was embarrassing for a DCE to see a contractor working on a project “you have no knowledge of, in your district.”

Mr Hayfron said this when a report was made to him that a Chinese contractor working on electrification project in the Mfantseman Municipality was removing electric poles he had erected.

He said because the contract was awarded in Accra without his knowledge the contractor did not find it necessary to know him the Chief Executive.

“If something happens to a contractor who is working in an area without the knowledge of the MMDCE who will be called to answer?” Mr Hayfron asked.

He said they needed projects for their people but that must not be used to disregard them and added “Though we were not against contracts being awarded elsewhere, at least we must be informed about them.”

Mr Hayfron said when contract documents were sent to them they would be in a position to monitor the contractors to ensure that they were working according to specification and they were using the right materials for the projects.
