NGO launches scholarship scheme for Ghanaians

Sankofa International Youth Ghana (SIYG), local representative of Sankofa International, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), based in Washington, D.C., has launched a comprehensive national scholarship programme to assist Ghanaians.

Under the Programme, Ghanaians could register for selection to receive full scholarships at the junior, senior high, vocational, technical, and tertiary levels, including advance degrees.

A statement issued and signed by Mr Richard Willis, President and Chief Executive Officer of SIYG, copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Tuesday, said the scholarship package includes school fees, books, accommodations, and pocket money.

The statement said: “The plan is to select scholarships recipients, through registration, three times each year.  One scholarship is guaranteed each registration cycle”.

It said multiple scholarships may be awarded during a registration cycle based on the number of registrants.

The statement said the first scholarship recipient(s) would be selected in May-June, 2011 after the selection process had been opened to the public in January 2011.

It said next year, a Programme Registration Team would travel throughout the country to offer interested individuals the opportunity to register.

The registration schedule are; January 21-23, Greater Accra Region at GNAT Hall, Accra City Campus (Legon) January 28-30 and Volta Region, Ho Municipal Assembly Hall, February 4-6.

Eastern Region, GNAT Hall at Koforidua-Galaway, February 11-13, Ashanti Region, GNAT Hall at Kumasi-Amakom, February 18-20 and Brong-Ahafo Region at Sunyani Municipal Assembly Hall, February 25-27.

Western Region, Parish Hall, Star of the Sea Cathedral, March 4-6 and Central Region, Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly, March 11-13.

The statement said people interested in Northern, Upper East and West Regions could register in any the Regions at the stipulated dates.

It said the NGO had been awarding full scholarships to students in the Ashanti and Greater Accra Regions since 2000 adding the new initiative however, was to expand the facility to cover the entire nation.
