Urban Roads to spend GH¢8m on Accra roads

The Department of Urban Roads (DUR) is to spend about GH¢8 million this year to complete ongoing road projects within the Accra metropolis to make them more motorable and reduce pollution.

It has also decided to focus greater attention on re-surfacing to improve the surface of some roads within the suburbs to cover the numerous potholes that have developed on them over the last few months.

The Metro Works Engineer of the DUR, Alhaji Abass Awolu made this known in an interview during which he answered questions on the measures to be undertaken by the department to improve on deteriorating roads in many parts of the metropolis.

He said, for instance, that the ongoing road works within the Dansoman SSNIT Flats, Kofi Owusu in the Ablekuma North Constituency and on Boade Road in Nungua would be given due attention to enable the projects to be completed.

Alhaji Awolu also mentioned projects at Kotobabi, Akweteyman and Abelemkpe/ Abofu as some of the roads that would be catered for.

He also said the Dansoman High Street and roads in the Korle Bu area would be attended to.

In the case of the Dansoman High Street, he said there were plans to dualise it but noted that that project would be undertaken at a later day.

Drains along some parts of the street reconstructed last year to pave the way for a major project but that has made the road worse than it was before, but Alhaji Awolu was optimistic that the receilling would take care of the defects.

He said the traffic lights in many parts of the metropolis would also be taken care of this year and noted that only a few out of the 177 traffic lights, in the metropolis were not working.

He indicated that the traffic controllers in the defective ones would be changed, while efforts to get a central control system were underway.
