Dormaa-East to rake in more funds internally

Dormaa-East District Assembly in Brong-Ahafo is to roll out a five-tier strategy to whip up internally-generated revenue mobilization this year and beyond.

Under the strategy, town and area councils in the district will be revamped and empowered to spearhead revenue collection processes while the assembly will institute award schemes for outstanding performance among revenue collectors and their supervisors.

Isaac Kofi Kyeremeh, District Chief Executive, announced this at the assembly’s second general meeting at Wamfie at the weekend.

He said as part of the strategy, a comprehensive data would be collected on all taxable persons, businesses and properties while intensive tax campaign would be embarked on to ensure success.

The meeting also sought to approve the assembly’s fee fixing resolution and budget for 2010.

Mr. Kyeremeh announced that out of its revenue target of GH¢108,663.80 for 2009, the assembly collected GH¢83,770.45, representing 77.1 per cent with stool land revenue and corporate property rate companies paying more than 40 per cent.

On development projects, the DCE announced that apart from completing a few projects in the district, the assembly also advertised in the media for bids to construct two three-unit classroom blocks, office, store, staff room and urinal for Kyeremasu SDA and Kyeremasu D/A Junior High Schools, provision of four metal refuse containers and completion of the Wamfie community library to be used as offices by the District Education Directorate.

He expressed regret that though the security agencies had helped the assembly to fight illegal chainsaw operations in the district, the practice persisted.

Mr. Kyeremeh charged the assembly members to educate the people on the dangers of desertification and the need to protect the country’s remaining forest cover for posterity.
