Government to cancel contracts of private cold store companies

Elizabeth Afoley Quaye, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development said government will cancel the contracts of private managers of the six cold stores and ice making plants constructed by the previous administration for poor management.

In a media briefing on Tuesday, the Minister said contracts were awarded to private companies and agreed with the ministry to pay some monies, but the companies failed to do so.

She said they attributed their failure to pay to high electricity tariffs that swept off their profits.

After a meeting with the ministry, she said they called on the energy ministry to reduce the tariffs on the cold stores.

Mrs Quaye said the ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development after engaging the Energy Ministry realized that the cold stores were not well managed and the ministry wrote to the Attorney General Department for the cancellation of the contracts of the managers.

According to her, the Attorney General said once the companies breached the contract by not paying, the ministry had the right to terminate their contracts and keep the facility for the state.
