Chief cries over lack of potable water in his community
The chief of Suhum Okanta, Nana Baffour Kwaku Okanta lll has lamented over the poor drinking water for the community.
Suhum Okanta, a farming community in the Suhum Municipality of the Eastern region is faced with severe water problems and currently the people compete with animals for the only source of water.
The chief who narrated the issue to the media in an interview said, the situation is worrying, because competing with animals for water has high health implications.
According to him, leadership of the community has made several complaints to various stakeholders to help the community get potable, but the response has not been favourable.
Nana Okanta said, the community had a borehole but due to the rocky nature of the area, the slightest drought dried it up.
He said, the Member of Parliament for the Suhum Constituency, Mr Opare Ansah dug one mechanized borehole for the community, but the people could not use it because there was no electricity in that area.
He therefore appealed to the Suhum Municipal Assembly and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO’s), to support the community to have access to potable water to enhance their health.
Some community members expressed their displeasure about the unhygienic nature of the water they use, but are compelled to use it because they don’t have an option.
