Ghana and Tunisia set new agenda for growth

Mrs Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, has hinted of a renewed commitment between the country and Tunisia to set a new agenda for holistic development.

“The commitment will deepen engagement at all levels, particularly within the area of economic cooperation”, she added.

This was in a statement issued by the Ministry and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Monday.

Mrs Botchwey, who is also the Member of Parliament for Anyaa-Sowutuom Constituency, made the announcement when she arrived in Tunisia to begin a two-day official visit.

The Minister’s visit is at the invitation of the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tunisia, His Excellency (H.E) Mr Khemaies Jhinaoui.

Mrs Botchwey is expected to hold discussions with her Tunisian counterpart and sign some agreements with her host during the period.

The Minister will also hold discussions with the Tunisian Ministers of Trade and Industry to explore areas of possible collaboration for mutual benefits, while engaging in a touristic and cultural visit to the Sidi Bou Said, a village laden with history and spirituality.

It will be recalled that, a 26-member Tunisian business delegation led by H.E. Hatem Ferjani, the Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Tunisia visited Ghana from January 13 to 17, 2019.

The visit afforded the two countries the opportunity to engage in discussions with the Ghanaian business community.

The issues discussed during the visit included the intention to boost connectivity between Accra and Tunis through direct air links by Air Tunis and a direct shipping line to the Port of Tema.

The historical ties that existed between Ghana and Tunisia dates back to the post -independence era and especially between Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President and Mr Habib Bourguiba, the former President of Tunisia.
