Ahafo Region created, Goaso capital
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Wednesday presented the Constitutional Instrument (C.I 114) to Nana Ansah Baah, Omanhene of Yamfo Traditional Area, and head of the delegation from the Ahafo Region, symbolizing the coming into effect of the Ahafo Region.
Goaso, the restive city in the Asunafo North Municipality has been chosen as the capital of the region. This brings to four, the number of regions created after last December’s referendum to be presented with Constitutional Instrument, officially making them autonomous regions.
The other three are regions are North East with its capital at Nalerigu, Savannah with Damongo as capital and Bono East with Techiman as its capital.
At a colourful ceremony at the Jubilee House in Accra, the President noted that, the clamour for the reorganization of the regions in the country had long historical antecedent, with Ahafo’s case dating back some forty years.
The petition for the creation of the region was first submitted in 1981, and the same petition was submitted to President Akufo-Addo when he assumed office.
The President said indeed the enthusiasm with which the people of the area took part in the consultative process leading to the creation of the region, and the outcome of last December’s Referendum was an attestation to the fact that the people really needed the reorganization of the region.
He said the Ahafo Region, with large deposits of gold, iron and bauxite and with significant percentage of the nation’s food produce coming from there, the potential for its development clearly existed.
The President said the residents of the area were of the firm belief that they would be better served developmentally by the creation of the region, hence “it is only fitting that government helps to accelerate the development of the region”
He assured them that government’s projects and structures would be equitably spread across the region, adding, “This is the beginning of a better and brighter future, not only for Ahafo, but also for mother Ghana.”
“With creativity, hard work and innovation, we can together work to bring progress and prosperity to all parts of our country…lets work at it and I am confident we shall succeed,” he said.
The current Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Evans Opoku Bobie, would act as caretaker Minister for the region.
On his part, Nana Ansah Baah expressed the appreciation of the Ahafo people to the President and government for the actualization of the pledge to give them their autonomous region and pledged their support to aid government develop the area.
