Two men jailed 30 years for robbery

Two persons were on Monday handed a 30-year jail term by an Accra Circuit Court for conspiring to commit crime and robbery.

The two, Yaw Antwi Boasiako and Kwaku Akorsah, were said to have conspired with two other persons Kofi Danso and Faisal, now at large to robbed one Gideon Brocke of his Toyota Camry private car worth $48,000.00.

They both pleaded not guilty to the charges but after trial, the court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh found them guilty of the charges and sentenced them accordingly.

They are both to serve 15 years each in hard labour on both counts with the sentences running concurrently.

The court in sentencing said the prosecution found sufficient evidence against both accused persons.

He said in sentencing, the court took into consideration the fact that the trial has taken three years and all this while the two have been in custody, and the plea for mitigation by their counsel.

Prosecuting, Police Inspector Kwabena Adu, had earlier told the Court that the complainant is an Engineer and lives at Community 3, Tema, while Yaw is a goldsmith and Kweku, a driver.

He said the accused persons together with one Ivan Kofi Danso now at large have been good friends.

On June 18, 2015 Ivan invited the accused persons together with one Faisal also at large to his house at Kwabenya and told them that he had seen a Toyota Camry in town and wanted them to steal it for him and they agreed.

The prosecution said on June 19, that same year, the accused persons together with Faisal went to Ivan’s house where he drove them to a drinking spot at Abelenkpe, after which he drove them back.

He said Ivan provided a locally manufactured gun to Faisal and drove them to Dzorwulu towards Fiesta Royal Hotel and spotted the complainant’s car being driven by himself with a friend on board.

He said they followed the car to a house on that same street, where the complainant parked for his friend to alight.

They parked directly behind the complainant’s car and Faisal went out and pointed a gun at the complainant, then forced him and his friend to come out of the car.

He told the Court that Faisal then drove the car with the accused persons to Ivan’s house.

The complainant reported the matter to the police and on October 5, 2015, acting on intelligence, the police retrieved the complainant’s car which had been re-registered from Ivan’s house.

He said investigations led to the arrest of the accused persons.
