Sun rays expire products before date – FDA

Mr Charles Adjei Mensah, Senior Regulatory Officer, Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Ho, has noted that Sun rays expired most consumables on the market before the given date by manufacturers.

He said products such as canned foods and cosmetics should therefore not be exposed to the direct Sun because the rays destroyed the enzymes that kept the products from expiring before time.

Mr Mensah was speaking at the monthly meeting of the Public Service Workers Union (PSWU) of Trades Union Congress (TUC) in Ho on food safety.

He urged the public to take pains and shop at accredited malls and avoid consumables either displayed in the open or placed under umbrellas because most of such products were not approved by the Authority.

The meeting was aimed at sensitising public workers to public health and food safety to help gather concerns and relevant information needed to develop interventions that would be used to ensure the promotion and sale of safe food to the public.

Mr Mensah said the FDA had a Post Market Surveillance team that moved through the markets to ascertain the authenticity of products on the market and issued appropriate sanctions to defaulters.
He advised the public to look out exclusively for volume, manufacturing and expiry dates on products before purchasing.

Madam Patience Nutakor, Administrator, FDA, Ho, said the Authority was alert at the various borders of the Region to ensure that food and drug products were not regulated by the Authority were not brought into the country.
