Zoomlion unhappy with default payment of waste collection fees

Waste management and sanitation company, Zoomlion, on Wednesday said it would not collect or empty domestic waste bins, if households fail to pay their monthly fees of GH¢30.00.

The Company expressed its displeasure over the attitude of some households that had reneged on their obligation to pay the monthly charges, but expected the Company to empty their bins.

Reacting to complaints by residents of Adomako, a suburb in the Sunyani Municipality, Mr. George Manu, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Public Jobs Manager of Zoomlion stated that waste management in the country was expensive and serious business.

The residents had earlier expressed disappointment in the operations of the waste management Company in the Sunyani Municipality, noting the failure of the Company to collect or empty their domestic refuse containers was creating a mess in the area.

But, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr. Manu said Zoomlion was determined to promote environmental cleanliness by ensuring that adequate household or domestic bins were supplied in neighbourhoods and communities.

He explained that it was the responsibility of the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to ensure public refuse containers were provided in communities and not the duty of the Company.

Nana Osei Kyeretwie Duako, the Chief of Adomako said because the community had no public refuse container, residents littered around and disposed waste haphazardly, creating unhealthy environment for them.

He expressed the fear that the situation could worsen, and contribute to outbreak of communicable diseases when the rains set in, and appealed to the Sunyani Municipal Assembly and NGOs to come to the aid of the community.
