AWCON 2018: Mali shocks Ghana with 2-1 defeat

The Group A of the ongoing African Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) is still open after host Ghana, was shocked with a 2-1 defeat by Mali.

This leaves the group opened with Cameroon, Ghana, Mali all standing at three points.

Cameroon, would however play Algeria in her second group game later in the day.

Mali were the better side having shown tactical superiority over their opponents.

Basira Toure converted a controversial penalty in the 24 minute of the game to put her side ahead.

Mali then retreated into a defensive play as Ghana fought for an equaliser.

Ghana’s skipper who came on as a second half substitute found the equaliser in the 73rd minute through the spot kick.

Toure, shot her side into the lead two minutes after Ghana’s goal following a scrappy clearance by the host defence from a set piece.

The results means Ghana would have to win her last game at all cost to safe their destiny in the tournament.
