Local authority, chiefs to establish land banks

The Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa District Assembly is collaborating with chiefs and land owners in the area to establish land banks for potential investors and the Youth in Agriculture programme as part of efforts to reduce poverty.

The District Chief Executive, Mrs Georgina Nkrumah Aboah, said this at the presentation of an award to 25 farmers at Breman Kokoso who worked on a demonstration farm established by the Humanitarian Foundation, an NGO based in the area.

They received a pair of Wellington boots each, cutlass, T-Shirt and 10 bags of maize harvested from the farm.

Mrs Aboah commended the NGO for its contribution towards poverty reduction and unemployment in the district.

She said the assembly, with support from European Union Micro Project Programme, would assist farming groups and societies to go into fish farming, gari processing and palm oil processing.

Mr Dawda Adams, the Executive Director of the NGO, said his organisation in collaboration with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture had trained 750 farmers in the district on their demonstration farm on modern agricultural practices.
