cooking stoveHweehwee, a community in the Kwahu East District, has taken steps to turn human waste into energy for use in cooking of meals for school children under the feeding programme.

Through the support of a Swiss non-profit organization, “Fason”, it is building a GHȼ120,000.00 toilet system to produce biogas.

Mr. Benjamin Addo, the Project Coordinator, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that it would serve the dual purpose of cutting down the cost of the feeding programme and improving sanitation in the area.

Revenue from it could also be channeled into other development projects dear to the hearts of the people, he added.

Construction of the 12 vault chamber water-closet facility, began about five months ago and now about 80 per cent completed.

He indicated that the necessary arrangements to ensure uninterrupted water flow for its smooth running had been made.

He said it was the organization’s contribution towards efforts at promoting environmental sanitation, particularly, in the deprived communities.

Mr. Solomon Aboagye, the assembly member, expressed confidence that the project would be ready before the close of the year and applauded the Switzerland-based organization for the assistance.
