UPP elects flag-bearer and national executives

The United Progressive Party (UPP) has unanimously elected Mr Akwasi Addai as its flag-bearer for the 2016 general elections.

Mr Addai, who is the founder of the party was also endorsed by the delegates’ as the national chairman of the party.

At its maiden congress at the Golden Tulip, Kumasi City, in Kumasi, on Saturday, the 1,500 delegates’ further endorsed the nomination of other national executive members of the party.

They were Alhaji Bashiru Zakari, First National Vice Chairman, Nana Akwasi Prempeh, Second national Vice-Chairman and Anane Kobo, third National Vice-Chairman.

Mr Razak Kojo Opoku was endorsed as General Secretary, Mr Emmanuel Adjei Akrong, National Treasurer, Mr Stephen Kwaku Saahene, National Organiser, Mr Gabriel Asamoah-Boakye, National Youth Organiser and Nana Ama Serwaah Nyarko, National Women Organiser.

Addressing the delegates’, Mr Addai said the UPP had come to redeem the country from its present economic woes created by the previous leaders of the country.

He said Ghana was not a poor country but “bad and lazy leadership had plunged the nation into its current socio-economic difficulties”.

Mr Addai said when elected in 2016, the UPP would empower and inculcate entrepreneurship into the citizenry and strengthen the private sector to stand on its feet to appropriately play its role as the engine of economic growth in the country.

The party would also embark on a massive mechanization of agricultural production and create cottage industries to add value to locally produced goods for both the export and domestic market.

Mr Addai, said as an accountable government, the UPP would bring on board competent and hardworking Ghanaians, irrespective of their political affiliations and give them appointments in various positions to ensure efficient management of the country’s resources.

The UPP would also bring government to the doorstep of the people by allowing them to choose and elect District Chief Executives for their localities and would also ensure development projects in their communities.

He said UPP had what it takes to turn the fortunes of the country around, and urged the people to give the party the mandate to change the situation in the country.

Mr Addai called on members of the party to begin their house-to-house campaign now to win more people for the party.

Some parliamentary candidates of the party were also introduced at the congress.
