Kwahu South Assembly fails to confirm DCE nominee

The Kwahu South District Assembly, at the weekend failed to confirm Mr Joseph Omari, the President’s nominee for the position of District Chief Executive (DCE).

Mr Omari, the incumbent DCE, failed to obtain the two-thirds majority votes as he polled 21 out of 33 votes cast, representing 63.6 per cent whereas 10 members voted against him.

A rejected vote was as well recorded at the election conducted by Mr Eric Mensah–Bonsu, the Deputy Eastern Regional Electoral Officer, at an emergency assembly meeting at Mpraeso on Sunday.

The Assembly will reconvene within 10 days to vote either to confirm or reject Mr Omari since he was able to obtain more than 50 per cent of the total votes cast.

Addressing the Assembly Members after the election, Ms Ama Frimpong, the Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, said though the Assembly Members had the right to confirm or reject the Presidents’ nominee, they should consider the development of the district.

She urged them to review their decision and confirm Mr Omari at the next meeting to enable him to implement the government’s policies and programmes to enhance development in the area.

Ms Frimpong advised Mr Omari to avoid witch hunting of those who voted against him but to cooperate with all the assembly members.

Mr Frank Ofosu Kissi, the Presiding Member of the Assembly, also advised the members to avoid taking entrenched position as that could stall development in the district.
