Stalemate in Hohoe Assembly resolved
A positive understanding has been agreed between the 22 elected Assembly-members of the Hohoe Municipal Assembly and its Chief Executive, Dr Margaret Kweku, in an emergency meeting on Thursday.
The meeting agreed that all grievances be addressed at its sub-committee levels, as members had demanded through a correspondence earlier on.
Dr Kweku, in a remark, debunked allegations that she was the architect and cause of purported arrest and intimidation of members by the security agencies and apologized to the members saying “Any inconveniences caused within the period be laid to rest for the sake of peace and development of the area.”
She promised to bring her authority to bear on the security agencies on issues involving the assembly-members and the security agencies in the Municipality.
Dr Kweku said management would be transparent in its dealings with the sub-committees and was ready to provide open-door leadership and administration.
Mr Rogers Sowu, spokesman for the Members told the Ghana News Agency that “For the sake of harmony, members agreed to send their grievances to the sub-committee level, to avert washing their dirty linen in public”.
The elected members, through a communication of May 20, this year, demanded explanations into business activities of the Assembly, including criteria used in the allocation of stores to beneficiaries, the operations of Sky Mount, a firm in the Municipality and the deplorable state of the Assembly’s construction equipment.
They again sought answers to why the allocation Committee’s reports and recommendations remained non-functional and to identify who the managers of the rehabilitated lorry park and its ancillary facilities were, and the allegation of unilateral decision being taken by the MCE, without recourse to the general Assembly and Executive Committee.
This led to their being invited to the Hohoe Division of the Bureau of National Security and Police Command and consequently to the Volta Regional Coordinating Council, which the Assembly members perceived as high-handedness, intimidation and abuse of their human rights, culminating into issuing of press statements.
