Workers urged to have confidence in “independent” Labour Commission
Employees must have confidence in the National Labour Commission (NLC) because its judgments are not influenced by government or dictated by any authority, an official of the NLC has said.
Mr Martin Didemudo, a research officer in the industrial relations division of the NLC speaking at a day’s seminar on Thursday, said workers should, therefore, have faith in the work of the Commission.
He said in order not to be aggrieved by the Commissions’ decisions, it was important that workers did not flout labour laws and urged both employers and employees to follow the rules and regulation governing industrial relations at all times.
The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), Greater Accra Regional Secretariat, organised the seminar for its women’s executive committee.
The NLC official also advised employers to always make available copies of employment contracts to employees in order to avoid unwarranted clashes or misunderstanding.
Mr Didemudo said employers must keep channels of communication open at all times and seek to protect workers’ interest, saying “workers should also work conscientiously, be punctual and obey lawful instructions.”
Mrs Theresa Nadia Abuga, Head of Women’s Desk, Ghana Trades Union Congress (GTUC), said gender equality only meant equal opportunity for women to contribute their quota towards the development of the nation and not equality with men.
Mr Peter Ali, Senior Industrial Relations Officer in-charge of the Greater Accra Region, said because the formation of trade unions emanated from long struggles, it was important all parties work to sustain the current unity being enjoyed at the labour front.
Ralph Apaayah, General Secretary of TEWU, urged the women wing to aspire to upgrade themselves academically and to take interest in trade union affairs.
He added that they should use their leadership skills to help in community development and build linkages with sister unions in order to learn new experiences.
