MTTU tells drivers to demand police chit when documents are seized

trotroThe Adentan District Unit Commander of Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of Ghana Police Service, has called on drivers to renew their Insurance and Roadworthy Certificates and Driving licenses to avoid arrest and prosecution.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Dwoahene Kaakyire Akyeampong said it is the responsibility of the Police and transport Unions such as Progressive Transport Union and Ghana Private Road and Transport Union to co-operation to ensure sanity on the roads to avoid road crashes, which leads to fatalities.

He made the call at Adentan in the Greater Accra Region, during a Road Safety Management forum with the various representatives of drivers unions in the area.

ASP Akyeampong asked drivers whose driving documents are seized by the police to demand chits from the personnel indicating the name and rank of the policeman who collected the documents.

This will enable them to trace their documents, warning that police personnel who misplace the documents would be surcharged with the cost of replacement.

He asked drivers who embark on long journeys to endeavour to rest to avoid fatigue, which could lead to road crashes.

ASP Akyeampong also called for regular maintenance of vehicles and to avoid overloading.

Drivers, he said, should have first aid kits, spare tyres and reflective triangles and put on their seat belts when driving to protect them during road crashes.

He said drivers using DV number plates at weekends should take note that when such a plate is covering a vehicle, it is only the driver and one passenger that should occupy the vehicle.

Such a vehicle should also have a log book.

Mr Vladimir Sanar Nortey, Transport Officer of the Adentan Municipal Assembly, said seven over passes would be built along the road from Atomic Junction to the old Adenta Police Barrier.
