Ghana cedi weakens against major trading currencies over five-day trading period
The Ghana cedi recorded a marginal depreciation against the United States dollar, the British pounds sterling, and the euro over the five-day trading period ending July 17, 2026, according to the Bank of Ghana daily interbank exchange rate data.
An analysis of the central bank’s published rates showed that the cedi lost ground against all three major currencies, with the pound sterling posting the strongest gains during the period.
The US dollar buying rate rose from GH¢11.47 on July 13 to GH¢11.54 on July 17, while the selling rate increased from GH¢11.49 to GH¢11.55.
The movement represents a 0.59 per cent appreciation of the dollar against the cedi over the period, reflecting sustained demand for the American currency in the foreign exchange market.
Similarly, the euro strengthened against the local currency, with its buying rate climbing from GH¢13.12 on July 13 to GH¢13.19 on July 17.
The euro selling rate also increased from GH¢13.13to GH¢13.21over the same period.
The British pound sterling emerged as the strongest-performing major currency, appreciating by approximately 0.95 per cent against the cedi.
The pound’s buying rate moved from GH¢15.39 on July 13 to GH¢15.54 on July 17, while the selling rate rose from GH¢15.41to GH¢15.56.
Market data indicated that the pound experienced the highest volatility during the week, recording a sharp increase on July 16 before moderating slightly on July 17.
The cedi’s depreciation against the three major currencies was gradual and orderly, with no significant market disruptions observed during the review period.
The dollar maintained a consistent upward trajectory throughout the week, posting gains on each trading day.
