Spain and Argentina set for historic World Cup final

The curtain is set to fall on one of the most exciting FIFA World Cup tournaments in history, as European giants Spain prepare to face defending champions Argentina in the grand final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday, July 19, at New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, United States.

The month-long football spectacle, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, has captivated billions of fans worldwide with breathtaking goals, dramatic upsets, tactical masterclasses, and the emergence of new stars.

The expanded 48-team tournament, the first of its kind in FIFA history, has showcased the growing competitiveness of world football, with several emerging nations challenging the traditional powers.

The competition opened with colourful ceremonies across the three host nations, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of North America through music, dance, and artistic performance — a fitting reminder of football’s power to unite people across cultures, languages, and continents.

From the very first matches, the tournament lived up to expectations. Packed stadiums, passionate supporters, and high-quality football combined to create an unforgettable atmosphere. Several heavyweight nations survived difficult group-stage tests, while a few underdogs delivered memorable performances that underscored the success of FIFA’s expanded format.

Spain’s road to the Final

Spain have been among the tournament’s standout sides, blending disciplined defending with their trademark possession-based football. The 2010 world champions eliminated Austria 3-0 in the Round of 32 before edging neighbours Portugal 1-0 in the Round of 16.

They continued their impressive run with a 2-1 win over Belgium in the quarter-finals, followed by a commanding 2-0 victory over France in the semi-finals to book their place in the final.

Spain has conceded just one goal throughout the knockout stages, a testament to their defensive solidity, while the creativity and pace of teenage sensation Lamine Yamal have powered a talented generation determined to return the nation to the summit of world football.

Argentina’s road to the final

Argentina, the defending champions, have once again shown why they remain among football’s elite. La Albiceleste opened their knockout campaign with a thrilling 3-2 win over Cape Verde, then overcame Egypt by the same scoreline in the Round of 16. A convincing 3-1 win over Switzerland in the quarter-finals set up a semi-final showdown with England.

The champions showed remarkable resilience, fighting back after falling behind against England — Enzo Fernández equalised late in the match before Lautaro Martínez headed home the winner in stoppage time, converting a Lionel Messi cross to seal a dramatic 2-1 victory and send Argentina into back-to-back World Cup finals.

A final chapter for Messi?

For Argentina ‘s captain Lionel Messi, Sunday’s final could mark the closing chapter of an extraordinary World Cup career. Having inspired his country to the 2022 title, the football icon now has the chance to lead Argentina to consecutive World Cup triumphs — an achievement that would further cement his place among the game’s greatest ever players.

Spain, meanwhile, are chasing only their second World Cup title, having last lifted the trophy in South Africa in 2010. Their youthful squad has impressed throughout the tournament with technical brilliance, tactical discipline, and a maturity beyond their years.

Football analysts expect Sunday’s final to produce a fascinating tactical contest — Spain’s patient, possession-based approach against Argentina’s attacking flair, experience, and fighting spirit.

A landmark tournament

Beyond the final itself, the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be remembered as a landmark edition. The expansion to 48 nations opened the door for more countries from Africa, Asia, North America, and Oceania to compete on football’s biggest stage, all while maintaining the high standards expected of the sport’s premier event. The tournament once again affirmed football’s status as a global language, capable of bringing millions of people together regardless of nationality, race, or culture.

As the countdown to Sunday’s final continues, anticipation is building across the football world. Fans are eager to see whether Spain will reclaim the game’s ultimate prize after 16 years, or whether Argentina will successfully defend their crown and make further World Cup history.

Whatever the outcome, the 2026 FIFA World Cup has delivered unforgettable moments that will remain etched in the memories of football fans for generations to come.
