Stalled Agenda 111 hospital at Chinderi sparks community outcry

The Agenda 111 hospital project at Chinderi in the Krachi Nchumuru District of the Oti Region has stalled, triggering widespread concern and frustration among residents.

The 60-bed capacity facility, initiated under the previous administration, was nearing completion before construction came to an abrupt halt shortly after the 2024 general elections.

The project, executed by Shapoorji Pallonji, was expected to significantly improve healthcare delivery in the district by providing modern medical services.

However, years after work ceased, the site remains deserted, with no visible activity, raising questions about the future of the once-promising healthcare initiative.

A visit by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) revealed an uncompleted and unattended structure, now turning into an eyesore in the community.

Residents who spoke to GNA expressed deep disappointment, blaming the discontinuation on political transitions and what they described as a recurring pattern of successive governments abandoning projects started by their predecessors.

Mr. Williams Kwame Mensah, a resident of Chinderi, lamented the suspension of the project, describing it as a major setback for the district.

He noted that the hospital would have served not only Chinderi but also surrounding communities, reducing the burden of travelling long distances to access healthcare in towns such as Tamale, Kete-Krachi, Nkwanta, and Worawora.

He called on government to provide clarity on the status of the project and take immediate steps to resume construction, stressing that completing the hospital would bring significant health and economic benefits to the area.

Women in the community have been particularly vocal about the impact of the stalled project, highlighting challenges in accessing antenatal care and safe delivery services.

Ms Grace Kumah Seyire said many feared that the lack of a nearby healthcare facility could increase risks for pregnant women and newborns.

Other residents who spoke to GNA also appealed to the government to urgently intervene, reassess the situation, and ensure completion of the Agenda 111 hospital to address the pressing healthcare needs of the Krachi Nchumuru District.

The abandoned project has become a symbol of unfulfilled promises, fuelling broader discussions on the need for continuity in national development projects, regardless of political changes.
