Ghana government to establish new college of education in Western Region

The Ghana government has announced plans to establish a new teacher training college in Ezinlibo, Jomoro, in the Western Region, as part of efforts to expand access to quality teacher education.
Mr Haruna Iddrisu, Minister of Education, said the College, earmarked to begin operations in 2027 under the GetFund project, would serve the needs of the community and contribute to strengthening teacher training nationwide.
He made the announcement in Accra on Tuesday during the inauguration of a 13‑member governing council of St John Bosco College of Education, Navrongo, in the Upper East Region.
Mr Iddrisu charged the College to maintain its reputation as a leader of excellence in teacher training.
He commended its strong Catholic values and role in shaping the behaviour of the youth.
“The College is visible in sporting activities. We will re‑establish schools and College’s competition to unearth talents,” he said.
The Minister further disclosed that government was reviewing legislation to allow alumni groups to participate in the governing councils of second‑cycle schools, with a minimum representation of two members, including at least one woman.
He explained that alumni played a significant role in complementing government efforts to support infrastructure development in schools.
Mr Iddrisu also urged staff of the Ministry and the Ghana Education Service to accept transfers in good faith, noting that such movements were normal and added new impetus to school administration.
Established in 1946, St John Bosco College of Education has played a significant role in advancing Ghana’s educational agenda.
The newly inaugurated council is chaired by Most Reverend Alfred Agyenta, Bishop of the Navrongo‑Bolgatanga Catholic Diocese.
Ms Abdulai Zenatu, a member of the council, accepted the responsibilities bestowed on them and pledged to uphold the values of the College.
