NPP delegates vote today in flagbearer primaries

All five aspirants seeking the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer position have concluded their nationwide campaigns as delegates prepare to vote in the presidential primaries today.

The aspirants are Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Mr Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Mr Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr Bryan Acheampong and Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum. They have toured the country presenting their visions to delegates and party faithful.

A total of 211,849 accredited delegates are expected to cast their ballots across 333 designated polling centres nationwide.

Polling opens at 0700 hours and closes at 1400 hours, after which counting and collation will begin.

The delegates’ register was finalised after validation and corrections, reducing the initial figure of 213,617 following the removal of deceased members and those who forfeited party membership.

The Electoral Commission (EC) is supervising the process to ensure transparency. Voting centres were jointly identified by the party and the EC, with additional points created in constituencies where delegate numbers exceed 1,000.

The Party said proxy voting has been abolished, and only accredited delegates with valid identification – voter ID card, Ghana Card or passport – will be allowed to vote.

Mobile phones are prohibited within voting areas, and participants must comply with conduct regulations.

The NPP has handed over the processes of voting, counting, collation and declaration of results to the EC.

Results will be declared first at polling centres, collated at regional centres and finally announced at the party’s national headquarters in Accra.

The Ghana Police Service said between 70 and 150 officers have been deployed at each centre, with military support in selected areas, particularly parts of the Upper East Region.

The Party has warned against the involvement of private security details, assuring that breaches will attract consequences.

Police have also trained party executives on election rules to ensure compliance, prevent crowding and protect delegates’ rights.

In the final week, opinion polls by Global InfoAnalytics projected Dr Bawumia with about 57 percent support, Kennedy Agyapong with 28 percent, and Dr Bryan Acheampong with 13 percent.

Dr Adutwum and Mr Agyepong were placed lower.

Analysts cautioned that polls are not definitive, as internal dynamics and regional loyalties may influence outcomes.

The Party said the new flagbearer must quickly foster unity and cohesion to prepare for the 2028 general elections, following the National Democratic Congress’ victory in 2024.
