Police foil robbery attempt; two suspects killed
The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has foiled a planned robbery attack on commuters at Manso, resulting in the death of two suspects and the retrieval of firearms, ammunition and a vehicle.
The operation followed intelligence that a gang of armed robbers had converged in a bush along the Antoakrom–Manso Nkwanta stretch, preparing to attack road users.
A press release copied to the Ghana News Agency on Monday said acting on the intelligence on December 31, 2025, a police team swiftly moved to the area, where it encountered four armed suspects.
It said the suspects opened fire on the police and attempted to flee, prompting the officers to respond.
“During the exchange, two suspects, later identified as Usmaro Mohammed and Yaw Frimpong, also known as Nana Yaw, sustained gunshot injuries, while two others escaped into the bush,” the release said.
The injured suspects were pronounced dead on arrival at the Bekwai Municipal Hospital, it said.
A search at the scene led to the recovery of one AK-47 rifle loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition, one pump-action gun loaded with four BB cartridges, four spent cartridges, a black bag containing 16 live cartridges, and a Toyota Voxy vehicle believed to have been used by the suspects.
The suspects were believed to be involved in several robbery incidents in Manso and Obuasi, including the Mpohor gold robbery, the Nyinahini highway robbery and a cocoa shed robbery at Sefwi, the release said.
“Preliminary investigations have established that the suspects worked with accomplices at Mankranso, Tamale and Brekum, who are currently at large,” it said.
Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to arrest the remaining accomplices and to establish the ownership of the impounded vehicle.
