High cost of local feed said to be causing collapse of poultry industry in Dormaa Municipality

The high cost of local feed is collapsing the poultry industry in the Dormaa Municipality of the Bono Region, Mr. Drissa Ouattara, the Dormaa Central Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), has said.

He noted that the price of a ton of local feed had jumped from GH¢1,500.00 to GH¢3,000.00 which had put a huge toll on many poultry farmers who could not afford to buy.

Mr Ouattara, therefore, appealed to the government to do something about the rising price of maize and other poultry feeds urgently to save the industry.

The MCE raised these concerns when Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene, the Bono Regional Minister visited and interacted with heads of Department and Agencies and staff of the Assembly on Wednesday at Dormaa-Ahenkro.

Mr Ouattara indicated the poultry industry had created employment opportunities for thousands of youths in the area, saying the collapse of the industry would get them out of jobs.

He said the Municipality had benefitted immensely from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, saying several development projects had been completed, while construction work on many others were progressing.

In response, Mad Owusu-Banahene stated “Bono is poultry and poultry is Bono” and assured the government’s intervention to save and promote the poultry industry not only in Dormaa, but in the entire region.

She said Dormaa Municipality had peace because the poultry industry had provided jobs for many of the youth in the area and, therefore, urged the poultry farmers to be patient and remain calm as steps would be taken to address the challenges facing the industry.

Mad Owusu-Banahene implored the Management of the Assembly to motivate the staff for them to be more dedicated and enthusiastic for maximum output delivery and stressed the need for strengthened relationship with the Dormaa Traditional Council for the purpose of accelerated development.

She said data was a key element in planning process and policy implementation, and asked the Assembly to collect reliable data, enhance its regular interface and feed the public with information on their activities to make decentralization efficient.

“We must also strengthen supervision and seal revenue leakages so as to improve the Assembly’s Internally Generated Fund”, she said.

Mad Owusu-Banahene cautioned the Assembly staff to refrain from partisan politics at workplaces and minimize excessive use of social media to increase productivity.
