NCCE recognizes contribution of women on International Women’s Day

The National Commission for Civic Education, (NCCE) on Friday joined the rest of the world to celebrate the International Women’s Day to recognize the contribution of women to society.

A statement issued by the NCCE, signed by Mrs Joyce Afutu, the NCCE Director in Charge of Corporate Affairs, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, said women worldwide have over the years, contributed their quota to development and touched many lives positively to ensure a better society.

It said the United Nations theme for the Day: “Think Equal, Be Smart or Build Smart, Innovate for Change,” was appropriate because achieving gender parity remained a critical vision for gender advocates.

The statement emphasized that mutual action and shared ownership for motivating gender parity had made International Women’s Day a global activity.

The NCCE said women have universally reiterated a call for policy makers to be thoughtful to the complexities and discrimination women faced.

It recommended the implementation of policies that would enable women to realize their potentials as well as increase the representation of women in politics and the decision-making processes.

“Gender parity is not just good for women; it is good for modern democratic societies and no country can truly develop if greater percentage of its population is left behind,” the statement said.

It said the substantial contributions women offered to nation building required that they were given the enabling environment to occupy strategic national positions.

The statement urged governments, Civil Society Organisations, and all stakeholders to support the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill to help increase the number of women in leadership positions for socio-economic development.

It called on all women in Ghana to be resilient in their quest to contributing to making the nation a better place for all.
