Ex-convict jailed 36 months for stealing

The Enchi District Magistrate court has sentenced a twenty-nine year-old charcoal burner to 36 months imprisonment in hard labour for causing unlawful damage and stealing.

Kwame Azumah who resides at Dadwen in the Jomoro District pleaded guilty to all the two counts and the court convicted him on his own plea and sentenced him accordingly.

Azumah, was recently jailed by the same court for committing a similar offence.

The presiding magistrate, His Worship Eric Baah Boateng said the judgment was to serve as a deterrent to others.

Prosecuting, Detective Sergeant Hackman Richard Addae told the court that the complainant, Kingsley Moro is a teacher and lives in Kwawu in the Aowin municipality in the Western North Region whiles the convict resides in Dadwen in the Jomoro District in the Western Region.

He said on 26 January, 2019, at about 2300 hours the complainant parked his Haojin star motorbike with registration M-17-AS-1518 in his house and retired to bed.

The Prosecution said Moro woke up the next day and noticed his motorbike was missing.

He said he then reported the theft to the Boniso Police and they also informed their counterparts around Elubo to be on the lookout for such motorbike.

Mr Addae said on the same day at about 0500 hours while the Police were on their usual patrol duties, an informant hinted them that the convict was seen pushing the said motorbike to Pataase a suburb of Elubo.

Mr Addae said the Police moved to the scene to arrested Azumah with the motorbike and escorted him to the station.

The Prosecution said when they inspected the motorbike it was revealed that the ignition key and the petrol tank cap valued at GH₵ 50.00 had been destroyed.

He said the convict was later handed over to the Boniso Police for further investigation.

Azumah admitted the offence in his caution statement.
