Hajia Alima Mahama, the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development on Tuesday inaugurated Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly.

The Assembly was created in accordance with the 1992 constitution and Local Governance Act, 2016, (Act936).

The inauguration ceremony was held at Sukura in Accra.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister on behalf of the President, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo said, the constitution provides that the country shall have a system of local government and administration which shall, as far as practicable, be decentralized.

Adding that, the constitution also offers the assemblies the chance to formulate and execute plans, programmes and strategies for the effective mobilization of resources.

“The government approach to drive the agenda for change, growth, job creation and prosperity can only be fulfilling if government brings governance to the doorsteps of the people to ensure effective and efficient decentralization through better planning and improved service delivery in local communities”, Hajia Mahama said.

She said the assemblies are the focal areas for the development agenda which include the provision of better opportunities and the enhancement of the quality life by using agricultural regeneration and industrialization.

Hajia Mahama said, the assemblies are the integral part of her vision for economic and social transformation provided in the coordinated programme of Economic and Social Development Policies 2017-2024 which was presented to Parliament.

“The flagship projects and initiative in the short-to-medium term will be successful if the assemblies play their respective roles in our agenda by revitalizing the economy, revamping social infrastructure, transforming agriculture and industry, providing social development, reforming the delivery of institutions of governance and leveraging on science, technology and innovation for development”, she said.

She urged all the stakeholders to assist the effort of government by helping to sustain decentralization process.

Mr Lord Oblitey Commey, the Director of Operations at the Office of the President, said another campaign promise of the President has been fulfilled and he is happy to be part of this historical event.

He said the presence of the Minister responsible for all districts to inaugurate this Assembly tells the premium the President has place on this process.

Mr Commey said the Minister has assured them that they are going to provide a seed money of 2 GH₵ million for the renovation and construction of the new Ablekuma Central Municipality.

Mr Albert Boakye Okyere, the Municipal Chief Executive of Ashaiman Municipal Assembly said, local governance is all about inclusive participation.
