Kwahu Traditional Council to implement customary practices to curb bushfires

The Kwahu Traditional Council (KTC) has planned to enforce traditional practices to deal with hunters who set peoples farms ablaze in the name of haunting for game.

The action is to reduce the rampant bushfires in the farming communities of the traditional area during the dry season.

The decision was taken when the Traditional Council met to discuss the development of communities in the Kwahu area at Mpraeso in the Kwahu South District.

Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, the Kwahumanhene, Daasebre Agyapong II called on every chief in the Kwahu area to establish fire volunteers in their various communities to help combat bushfires during this harmattan season.

He said it is about time heavy duty vehicle that carry bags of charcoal from Afram Plains through the ridge to pay levies on the charcoal to the council to support the development of the Kwahu area.

The Kwahumanhene said for years, charcoal burners in the Afram Plains have not paid any royalties to any traditional authority and soon the council will take on such people.

The meeting proposed the establishment of the Kwahu Development Advisory Board to spearhead the collection of levies for the council for development.

The council called the Kwahu South Forestry Commission Director to stop the cutting down of trees along the Kwahu scalp which protects the Kwahu mountains.

The council promised to support the Ghana Police Service in the area to deal with the rampant armed robbery attacks in the area in recent times.

Daasebre called on all the chiefs to be united to help bring peace and unity to support a better development of the Kwahu area.
