Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences gets new President

Professor Henrietta Joy Abena Nyarko Mensa-Bonsu has been elected the new President of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences.

She replaces Prof. Aba Bentil Andam, who has just completed her two year term, and becomes the third woman to assume the high office of the Academy.

Prof. Mensa-Bonsu, in her remarks, said she would ensure that the high standards of the Academy are maintained during her tenure.

She said, it was important for the youth to be drawn to the works of the Academy because the country is basically owned by them.

“The Academy is all about the well-being and progress of the country. Some of us are ageing and on our way out. It is you the young ones that would remain in charge of affairs. It is, therefore, very important that you show interest in the affairs of the Academy,” she said.

Prof. Mensa-Bonsu said, there is the need for the Academy to make use of modern innovations such as social media in order to reach a wider audience, especially the youth.

Prof. Aba Bentil Andam, the out-going President, decorated the new President with the Chain of Authority, and said she would be ever available for any assistance that might be required of her.

Prof. Mensah-Bonsu was sworn in along with a 10-member Governing Council.

The Academy is a learned society, established by an Act of Parliament in 1959, to promote

knowledge within all the arts and sciences towards the overall growth of the nation.
