Chief of Enyan Abaasa asks government to divide district into two
Osagyefo Kwame Akonu X Paramount Chief of Enyan Abaasa Traditional Area has called on government to divide the district into two because it has exceeded the constitutional requirement for a municipality.
He said according to the 2010 census, 2018 projected population would reach 136, 470.
This is far above 95,000 requirement needed to be elevated to the statues of a municipality, hence the need for it to be divided into two component constituencies under the same Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam district to ensure the deepening of democracy and to also expand governance system at the district.
Osagyefo Akonu X made the appeal at a durbar to climax their 2018 AKwambo festival for the chiefs and people of the traditional area to raise funds to complete their traditional hall projects held at Abaasa.
The festival, which was on the theme, ‘The Role of a Leader in Development” coincided with the Silver jubilee celebration of Osagyefo Akonu X.
It was graced by his colleague chiefs in the central region led by Obrempong Nyanful Krampah XI, Daasebre Kwebu Ewusi VII paramount Chief of Abeadze traditional area and Vice President of the National House of Chief, Nana Appiah Newama Council of State representative of the Central Regional and many other prominent personalities.
According to Osagyefo Akonu X such a population size cannot be well represented and served effectively by only one constituency, adding that the constituency is made up of one hundred and ninety six (196) communities with nine large electoral zones made up of forty-seven electoral areas.
“It is worthy to note that this constituency is made up of five traditional councils. The paramount chiefs met at Ajumako and agreed for the need to divide the constituency in two.
“We have severally petitioned the local government Minster on the need for such a division but our efforts have failed. The petitions we sent cannot be traced at the Ministry”, he stated.
He said they also proposed that Enyan Tradition area has three councils “Enyan Abaasa, Denkyira, and Enyan Maim Traditional Councils” with 87 communities and “Ajumako and Essiam Traditional Councils” has 109 communities under the Akumak0-Enyan-Essiam district Assembly which qualifies for such a division.
This, He said will go a long way to ensure that all persons in the district fully participate in the governance system, he added.
Speaking on the theme Osagyefo Akonu X noted that role of a leader in development was to ensure Peace, Unity and Justice in his community, and added the chief is a prosecutor and judge, an arbiter and arbitrator, a mediator and a ruler, has to be trustworthy, honest, transparent and steadfast.
“Here in Enyan Abaasa, brokering peace after 11 years of protected chieftaincy dispute between his predecessor and Abasaaman, we have now put in place structures that have contributed to the unity and stability and development of the area.
“I am proud to announce that there is only one stool in the traditional area that has a chieftaincy dispute pending at the traditional council saying there is no chieftaincy litigation pending before the central regional house of chief or the national house of neither chiefs nor the Supreme Court.
He said through his efforts the Police Station in the area which was closed down in 1996 as result of fighting between the police and some of the youth in the area was re-open.
Obrempong Nyanful Krampah XI Omanhen of Gomoa Ajumako Traditional Area and President of the Central Regional House of Chiefs on behalf of the entire members of the Central Regional House Chiefs congratulated Osagyefo Akonu X and his people for a peaceful celebration.
He commended Osagyefo for his exemplary leadership that brought development to the area and urged the entire people of the traditional area to continue to make it a collective responsibility to help develop their area.
