Tema East NDC has not endorsed Bagbin – Secretary

The Tema East branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rejected claims that it supports Mr Alban Bagbin’s bid to lead the party in the 2020 general elections.

The Constituency also observes that words of persons making those claims do not represent the entirety of the branch and therefore should be disregarded.

Speaking to the press on Wednesday at the constituency office, Tema Community One, the Constituency Secretary, Mr Abdulai Seidu, said, “I want to state without a scintilla of contradiction that Tema East Branch of NDC has not endorsed Mr Bagbin. The Constituency Executive Members have not met to discuss, mention, or contemplated any such endorsement. It is therefore highly preposterous for any person or group of persons to make such false claims.”

He observed that it was within the rights of the two persons concerned; Mr Stephen Ashitey Adjei and Mr Phillip Yankey, to support anybody they deemed fit and publicly endorse him or her, “But their right to endorse any candidate of their choice cease with them. We would not allow any political craftsman to trade with our constituency.”

Mr Seidu informed that Mr Adjei was a supporter of Mr Bagbin which had earned him a Nissan Pickup with registration number GT 8265-16 and therefore it was not surprising that Mr Ashitey was throwing his whole weight behind Mr Bagbin.

He advised Mr Bagbin to be wary of persons who spoke for him because “they may be doing so to leap-frog themselves into political limelight and not necessarily championing his campaign or cause.”

He added that, “I am by this informing the general public that it is only two executive members of the constituency who have declared support for Mr Bagbin and not the entire constituency executive members as purported.”

Mr Hussain Mohammed Bashar, Tema East Constituency Youth Organizer, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), informed that this was not the first time such a thing had happened in the constituency, but the constituency executives had not reacted because they felt those persons had the right to support anybody they wanted to.

He observed that he supported the candidature of John Dramani Mahama (JDM) but was not of the mentality that every member of the party did same, “I therefore stay focused and do not want to force my mind on anybody that’s why I have not publicly made my support for JDM.”

He said the constituency remained resolute because their target was 2020 and who ever emerged as the flag bearer would enjoy the support of the constituency.

The press conference was in response to the news item on UTV on Tuesday by Mr Adjei and Mr Yankey that the Tema East Constituency of the NDC had endorsed Mr Bagbin as flagbearer of the NDC.
