More females graduate from UCC

The Seventh Session of the 50th Congregation of the Institute of Education, University of Cape Coast (UCC), saw more females graduating with B.Ed Basic Education and Early Childhood through the Sandwich Programme.

Out of the 1,607 graduands, 910 were females as against 697 being males.

They were from the Wesley College of Education, Kumasi, Tamale College of Education, OLA College of Education, Cape Coast, St. Teresa’s College of Education, Hohoe, and the Presbyterian College of Education, Akwapim-Akropong.

Addressing the graduands, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph Ghartey-Ampiah, said UCC was scaling up its Diploma in Basic Education Programme to the degree level in accordance to reforms by the Ministry of Education geared towards improving quality of teacher education.

He said the Institute would continue to mentor the colleges of education and train their tutors to build on their research capacity in teacher education and professional development.

“The University and the Institute of Education will work out a strategy, which will enable assistant tutors in the colleges of education to enrol on relevant programmes in the University to progress in their career.”

Prof. Ghartey-Ampiah said plans were afoot for the introduction of MPhil Teacher Education and M.Ed, MPhil and PhD Pedagogy programmes in various disciplines at the Institute.

He advised the graduands to persevere and be determined as they forged ahead to bring about positive change in their lives and that of their communities.
