Mr David K. Gyewu has been appointed Acting Director-General of the National Information Technology Agency (NITA) with immediate effect.
A statement issued by the Ministry of Communications and copied to the Ghana News Agency said Mr Gyewu is an experienced business operations strategist and technology specialist with experience at a high and senior level in both the private sector and governmental administration.
It said he holds a Master of Science Information Systems and Management from the Kingston University, Executive Education from the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School and his leadership abilities were acknowledged with a teaching assistantship at the Harvard Kennedy School after graduating from same school.
It noted that Mr Gyewu was appointed Deputy Minister of Communications and Technology in 2003 and was the youngest member of the country’s ministerial team at the time.
It said he also served as Special Assistant at the Office of the President in the Kufuor administration.
The statement said he had considerable experience in Information Technology (IT), Economics, Business, and Governmental issues, having served for several years in senior corporate management whilst at Philips and Atos/Origin where he worked with several multinationals including DSM, ABN-AMRO Bank, ICI, Singapore Government, Haliburton, Coca Cola (Australia) and the European Space Agency.
It said prior to that he had worked at BOC and Unichem in the UK.
It said until his appointment to the current post, he was the Technical Advisor to the Ministry of Communications and spearheaded the review of the World Bank funded E-Transform Project.
The NITA Act provides for a number of functions including performing the functions of the certifying Agency established under the Electronic Transactions Act, 2008 (Act 772) and the issuance of licenses under the Act and ensure fair competition among license holders.
Others are implementing and enforcing the provisions of the Act, the Electronic Transactions Act, 2008 (Act 772) and regulations made under the Act; monitoring, enforcing and ensuring effective compliance with conditions contained in licenses and tariffs; and maintaining registers and licenses and applications for licenses.
The rest are maintaining registers for approvals given for equipment under the Electronic Transactions Act, 2008 (Act 772); collecting fees and other charges to be paid to the Agency under this Act; investigate and resolve disputes between license holders under the Electronic Transactions Act referred to the Agency by license holders; and investigating complaints by users who fail to obtain redress from a license holder.
