The National Information Officer of the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Ghana, Mrs Cynthia Prah, says gender equality is achievable even in the face of the many challenges facing women in Ghana.
“As we put it in our minds that it is achievable we will work towards it, but if we put it in our minds that it is not attainable then it means it cannot be done. So we need to put in place mechanisms that will make us achieve it,” she said.
She said this during a visit to the Good Shepherd Anglican School in Old Ningo and some communities in the area as part of this year’s celebration of the International Day of Women.
The visit, which was organized by the Abibiman Foundation and the UNIC, was to create awareness about the need to promote gender advocacy.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mrs Prah observed that gender equality is important because “if one group of people are not given the opportunity to advanced as part of the whole society, it means we will always be left behind.”
She said this year’s celebrations, which was on the theme, “Rural and Urban activists transforming women’s lives”, sought to promote women activism as a way of creating attention about issues that affected women.
The District Chief Executive Officer, Ningo Prampram, Mr. Jonathan Doku, who espoused the need to promote gender equality in the district, announced the appointment of a gender desk officer to facilitate programmes related to women empowerment in the Ningo Prampram District.
Ms. Daniella Akorfa Awuma, Miss International Africa 2017/18,said, “I want to see all girls in school with their rights being fought for and living comfortable life. I want to see that girls are not forced into early married and forced labour.
It is time we fight to protect our girls in Ghana so they don’t travel into the unknown and become hewers of wood and drawers of water,” she said.
The Abibiman Foundation used the occasion to distribute Abibiman MA Insert, to the community members. The items which was environmentally friendly reduces firewood usage by 63% and reduces cooking time by 15 minutes
